The University of Wollongong has announced 200 to 300 jobs to go at UOW by end March 2025. If you are impacted by the UOW redundancies, I’d like to help.
Having been through redundancy myself and run a virtual festival on redundancy recovery during Covid (with help from Good2Give and Facebook Australia), I know how hard this can be for the people in round one who were notified yesterday, and those who will find out their fate in rounds two and three between December and March.
It is not easy. It is a stressful process. The waiting sucks. Being in limbo like that, especially before Christmas when you probably thought you were headed for some stress relief after a busy year, is really bloody hard. And even with workplace counselling and a good package, redundancy can really mess with your head and confidence.
I understand that academics will be the first staff impacted by the UOW redundancies. With news coming through from other regional universities that are facing similar cuts, I know this must be especially difficult. It is a unique working life, and difficult to replace.
That’s why I am asking any academics out there who are looking to move from university life to self-employment and might need coaching to make that transition, please get in touch with me. I’d like to offer five people one hour beach coaching at Windang beach. We’ll walk, we’ll talk, we’ll probably laugh at a Pelican or two. Simple.
And no, it isn’t charity or some bullshit sales thing to get you in the door. And no, we don’t have to be friends or have connected before. I just want to help. As the university is the Illawarra’s biggest employers, the UOW redundancies will have a ripple effect on the entire community. We all know someone – and that makes it a time to pull together.
Besides, you’d be helping me test a new idea and get some testimonials, and giving me the chance to help in a meaningful way.
